How to Check Word Count of an Article on a Blog in Real Time

One of the never solved questions of the blogosphere is the number of words to consider for an article. After listening to many pro-bloggers saying that there is no specific word count to be followed, the new newbie bloggers still find this a confusion at the beginning.

The word count is a factor that helps to rank the websites indirectly. The more number of words, the more number of keywords spread on the page. The more number of the keywords spread on the page, the more visibility it gives to a webpage in SERP.

counting-words-blogpost
However, to check the word count in order to rank or to assess your competitors, you would have been actually seeking the help of Microsoft Word or similar text editor software. Isn't it?

Copying all the selected text carefully and pasting on the text editor just to check the word count may not be a smart move. Don't you think?

To make the measuring of word count simple, use the following technique:

Step 1: Go to Google Chrome Web Store and search for "Ultra accurate word counter".

Step 2: "Add to Chrome" and let the installation get finished.

Step 3: Go to the article page that you want to check the count of words on.

Step 4: Click on the "Ultra accurate word counter" icon on the extension bar and activate it. It turns green when activated.

Step 5: A small dotted square will be appeared on the cursor. Drag it over the text in the article and leave the mouse button. You will then be shown the word count, the character count and the white spaces count in a context-menu like window right there.

Step 6: Click 'Again' to select the text again. Click 'Done' if you are done with the counting. Repeat the same process from Step 4 on every article page on the blog that you want to assess.

That' it. Hope that helped!

How to Select, Optimize and Add Images to a Blog Post?

Images are part of the content. For some people images are the content alone.

If text can deliver the complete information to the reader, images can trigger their imagination. So, it is important to select proper image for your blog post or else it can spoil the entire flavor of the blog post.

Selecting the images is not the end of the game. If your textual blog post is less than 20KB and your image weighs 500KB size in it, the page load time will automatically be increased smoothly under the mat thereby shooing away your readers without serving them the intended.

Selection is first step in the three-step process. Optimization is the second step in it. Optimization include resizing the image, creating or modifying the image as per the color and flavor of the blog post.

Do not relax when you are done with selection and optimization. The real skill needed is now i.e., where to add it? Selection and optimization of images is just gathering up and making up of things ready, like as in your favorite cookery programme on TV.  Adding them in the right place will bring the beauty to the post and engage the readers for longer times.

Let dig out deep aspects in selecting the images, optimizing them and adding them in the right place of the blog post.

Selecting images for your blog post

Selecting images depicts your imagination and creative skills. No matter if you are selecting a ‘Labeled for reuse and modification’ image from Google images or creating a new one using canva.com, your mood at that time reflects in the selection of images.

Turn off your external moods – Do not let the your external moods affect the quality of your selection. Write down the text in the blog post completely first and later go for image selection. If you could not concentrate on selection task, just read out the full blog post once or twice to get the idea of what kind of images to add.

image-no-image-frustration

Select visually appealing images – Adding images of lower sizes is not the only constraint to follow, selecting the right one that when shared on social media should represent the information your blog post link contains.

Find some humor filled images along with information – If you ever had seen the memes on social media, you would have got an idea by now. Images that spill humor will attract the attention of viewers. Make some adorable humor filled images that matches the content of your blog post. These kind of images not only bring a lot of traffic but also amplifies the interest of the readers if placed in the right place on the page.

>> Scroll down to see the discussion about the positioning of the image.

Better create new images than selecting the pre-existed ones – New is always unique. Search engines and human readers like new and fresh content. If you want your blog post stand out among the rest, make sure you have every piece of it unique.

Consistent unique updates posted on your blog ranks it quicker and higher

Optimizing the images

As we talked about it before, selecting the images is just first part of the three-step process. Though you choose the very appealing images insulated against your external moods and disturbances, people won’t wait to see them unless they load faster along with the textual content.

The average patience rate of an average internet user waiting for a webpage to load is 5 seconds at minimum and 10 seconds at maximum. If you can’t make the images load before 4-7 seconds, they’re gone.

So, to make the images load quicker, to make them look perfectly fit into your blog post layout and to make them search engine friendly, you need to optimize them in every possible way.

Scale the image(s) – Scaling the images means cropping them to fit in your blog post layout. In other words, the width and height of the image should fit your blog post layout well. For example cropping down the image up to 640x420 is okay but, pushing the height of the image regardless of the width, say 640x500 or plus takes a lot of page space vertically and pushes the content down.

In one simple sentence,

Do not create oversized or undersized images (*size=in terms of scaling here)

Resize the images – A quality image weighs more than a Megabyte (MB) sometimes. Don’t you dare to post such larges images in your blog posts which increases the page load time of your article page. Instead, compress them using online tools like TinyPng, Image Optimizer, Optimizilla or any other software that you would prefer.

It is always recommended to maintain the size of the image under 100KB. If you are using more than one image in your blog post, better make it under 50KB without losing the quality

If you could observe, go to official websites of smartphone manufacturers and check the size of the images that they have used there, on their landing pages. If they can do it, we can do it too.

Give ‘title’ and ‘alt’ tag and never forget it – Title is what defines the whole content. What if you don’t put a title for your article and have written a top quality content? Will it be readable? Will anyone even take a look at it?

Never!!

Images are the part of the content too. They need ‘title’ and ‘alt’ tags to be specified. ‘Title’ tag helps the image get indexed by the search engines easily. It appears on the image when mouse is hovered on to it. Whereas, ‘alt’ tag helps the user let know of what the image was if it won’t load for any reasons.

If it helps the user, it means it is optimized well for search engines too.

These are the basic steps of optimization. If you can do anything to make them load faster and give more information with the ‘title’ and ‘alt’ tags (without violating the search engine or web spam policies), you can apply them and test out the results. Because optimization is for humans not for search engines.

Adding images in your blog post

Hope you got an idea about selecting and optimizing the images for your blog post by now. So, you have your images optimized ready with you now but where to add them in a blog post?

There comes the the question again!

If selecting and optimizing the images is one side of the coin, adding them in the right place takes the other side. The positioning of image(s) should not disturb the structure and quality of the post(s).

Where to add the images in a blog post?

It can’t be anywhere at random. It depends on the type of the blog post you are writing and size of the image that you are planning to insert.

One position of the image in a blog post may/may not be the same for the next one also. As I said, it depends.

Tutorial blog posts – If you are writing tutorial blog posts that involve the steps of demonstration. Then, it is always good to use the screenshots or whatever the images you’d like to add according to the steps and insert them step-wise.

Adding images to the tutorial blog posts is easy though.

Review blog posts – If you are reviewing a gadget, a software or any potato in your blog post, it is better to include a big picture in the starting (just like NDTV Gadgets and Android Authority) itself and do the text later. Let’s see how adding big picture works for gadgets.

The visitor comes to page (by seeing that screenshot shared on social media or from search engine results page by seeing the title) to see the appearance of the gadget even before the specifications. Adding big picture before the text i.e., right under title of the blog post will compromise him to stay on the page to read the rest of the text.

Images engage visitors for more time than text.

Or

You can give a short introduction of the gadget and add the big picture (just like I do while reviewing gadgets).

Informative blog posts – It is always better to include the textual content first and add images in the middle of the post. This will give their reading imagination a shape and a ‘picture’ when they come to the middle of the post.

If you have ever read the news in MSN News app in Windows 8, you would realize this strategy being applied in their articles by many news apps.

Personal stories – The blogging was all started to fulfill this purpose only in the beginning. If you are writing personal stories in your blog post and want add some moments hat you have captured, add them in the middle synching with the situation that you are telling. Do not add up all the images at a place. This will dominate the textual content and make your visitors directly skip on to the images over text.

Take an example of this blog post layout,

personal-blogpost-layout

Concluding

In this tutorial, we’ve learnt,

  • How to select the images for the blog posts without being influenced by external moods.
  • How to scale, resize and SEO optimize the selected images and,
  • Where to add the images depending on the type of the blog post we are writing.

Add the images with respect to the layout of your blog and type of blog post you are posting. Step into the shoes of your visitors and see which positions in your layout are visually dominating and engaging the most. If you could sync the text and image content of the blog post perfectly, you could increase the visitor page engagement time easily which pushes you website to higher ranks automatically.

If you think I’ve missed anything in the post that is necessarily be discussed about, please comment below. We’ll discuss!

How To Improve Your Mobile Search Ranking After The Mobile-Friendly Update (April 2015)?

Mobile-friendliness is what matters for Google now. The search engine giant has taken the mobile friendliness as a ranking signal. Many website owners who have not yet adapted the responsive design should hurry up in order not to lose traffic from small screen devices.

The mobile phone traffic has increased exponentially over the past few years. Search engines like Google took the issue seriously and to facilitate the growing mobile users, announced that they will be considering mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal from April 21st of 2015.

As said, Google started the update rolling out since then. Bloggers and website owners who already had responsive templates installed on their blogs and websites relaxed and the ones who didn’t, started worrying so much after this update.

If you have website on ‘Blogger’ and your responsive template is not actually working on the mobile devices, go through this recent post that will help you to get along with the settings and get back the power of responsiveness.

mobile-friendly-is-not-enough

In fact, having a responsive template is not enough. The message ‘Awesome! This page is mobile-friendly’ will not help you rank higher for mobile search traffic. You need to make sure that your site is following the Google’s site design principles. If it is not, there is no difference between having a responsive and non-responsive template.

In this article, I will be discussing those principles and their core intention of being specified. Tuck yourself in a seat, learn, implement them for your website and improve your mobile search ranking.

#1 Place calls-to-action elements correctly

If yours is a selling site, you should consider this principle very seriously.

Keep the call-to-action elements on the page in a place where you think users will see them. Consider keeping them mostly in the upfold of the page.

Expecting users to scroll down the page or to go to another landing page from the loaded one will frustrate them. So, design elements as shown in the left picture is not encouraged by mobile-friendly algorithm.

#2 Optimize navigation menus

An extensive navigation menu on a mobile screen will not only look large but also is massive to navigate through it.

If you look at the mega menu of Amfas Tech, you could notice it shrinking down when opened in a mobile device.

mobile-optimized-menu-amfastech

It then is easy to navigate through the side without dragging the screen horizontally for menu items.

#3 Let them get back to home page

Let us suppose a situation as a blogger. We write long articles, really long articles sometimes that even crosses 4000 words. Some topics deserve the long word count. When our readers come to our site and read that article, they will go deep down the page by scrolling down. How frustrating would it be for them if they can’t get back to the home page in a blink? Just think.

Fix the header/logo of the site on the top of the site for mobile screens. It will help your readers get back to the home page in just one click.

For example, you can take a look at this following screenshot of one of the Amfas Tech’s pages with a fixed header/logo on the top:

amfastech-fixed-header-logo

Users will expect a logo on the top of the page to get back to homepage as per Google studies.

#4 Take care of ads on the site

Google respects this information-first policy on mobile pages too. When someone visits your website or blog, he/she would expect the content that he/she is searching for. If ads overlay the content, they’ll get frustrated and leave the site in fraction of seconds.

Are ads bad for mobile pages?

Definitely not. Why should you lose the value of the quality content that you have created all those hours. Google never said that ads are bad. They always encouraged those kind of ads that are easily dismissable and non-distracting. Check out for issues with your ads as soon as you are finished with this article.

#5 Make search bar visible

When it comes to small screens, users would actually prefer to search most than to navigate through pages. It, in fact would be easy to find information through on-site search bar.

amfastech-with-mobile-friendly-search-bar

Make sure the site’s search bar is placed in a visible area of the home page itself. Visitors might find it difficult finding the search bar on the home page on a mobile screen. So, placing it in visible area would impress them too.

#6 Make sure of relevant search results

Placing the search bar is not enough though. Make sure the search results shown are relevant to the keyword typed.

Can Google analyze my search logic?

**Why not? Because it’s Google**

No! I really don’t know about Google fully. I’m just messing up with you.

The thing is that if the visitor gets relevant results for his searches on the site, he will stay a bit longer browsing all those relevant links. Having visitors for longer times benefits your site in terms of ‘user engagement time’. You know the rest of the story

#7 Implement filters to search

According to the research conducted by Google, mobile internet users expect to see the search filters that say ‘sort by’ and ‘filter by’ on site’s home pages, that too mainly on ecommerce websites.

Implementing filters on blogs with category names or tags also makes the blog look easy to navigate and beautiful too.

#8 Guide users properly to get better results

For websites that allow sales of products and services, it is advised to provide proper guidance along with the search filters.

It makes the visitors land right on the required content page where they can get right information within reasonable waiting time.

#9 Do not popup registration forms too early

Catching the subscribers is important but we should not force them to subscribe prior they see the content. This will not only send away the incoming traffic as soon as they enter the site, but also discourages them to visit the site back in future. Impression is what matters in case of subscribers and visit-backers.

#9 is not the last number

All the above 9 points that we have discussed are basic guidelines that Google suggests for every site. Google also provides guidelines for ecommerce sites in specific along with these.

Apart from Google’s suggestions, there is a lot to optimize a website. You can optimize your best to make the site look more handy and easy-to-use for the users. If you want to check out some coding suggestions, I’d recommend you to check out the latest post on Aha-Now blog on mobile friendliness.

Remember, Google will always appreciate the content that follows the information-first and user-feasibility guidelines.

Don’t forget to tell me when you are done optimizing your website for mobile.

All the best!

5 Tricks to Speed Up Your WordPress Site for Fast Page Loading

Do you have a WordPress blog? That’s why you are here, right. No one likes a snail-like website in this world of pace. So optimizing your WordPress site for speed is very much important. WordPress is a ready-made platform. It can do wonders for sure. But the biggest disadvantage is its page load speed. Comparing with the Google’s kid (Blogger), WordPress is very slow. But you can make your site load like a rocket by doing some tweaks. Here I am sharing some useful tricks to boost the loading time of your WordPress site.

Ready for the kill? Here we go.

Speedup-wordpress-for-fast-page-loading

1. Wisely Choose Your Hosting Providers

Hosting is the heart of a WordPress (self- hosted) site. We have to choose it wisely because you are very well aware of what happens if the heart stops working. There are many types of hosting like shared hosting, VPS hosting, dedicated servers and so on. Don’t be obsessed with the words of providers. Think thrice before purchasing from a host. If you are planning something big, don’t hesitate to spend some extra bucks. Because it is better to stay live rather than go offline after getting good traffic.

2. Use a Good Cache Plugin

This is an extremely important step. Because a good cache plugin can make or break your blog. In a site, some elements can be cached to speed up the overall performance. The fact is we need a third party to make elements cached. Cache plugins effectively do this job. There are two major cache plugins, W3 Total Cache, and WP Super Cache. Both of them are effective. Be careful not to install unpopular cache plugins. There are so many features like browser caching, minify etc.

3. Optimize Your Images

If you have a regular website, most of the hosting space is occupied by images. Higher the image size, slower the page speed. So don’t upload pictures with large size. You can make use of online tools like compressnow.com to reduce the size. There is also a plugin to do this job, called Smush.it. Install this plugin and it will compress your images automatically to a great extent. But I recommend you to compress your images with ‘compressnow’ and then upload it. This will do wonders.

4. Reduce the Number of Plugins

Plugins are a superb feature of WordPress. But too much of anything is poisonous. So don’t install all the plugins you hear about. Use your senses and know your needs. Then install only that plugins you extremely want. There are some plugins like SumoMe which can do multiple tasks like social sharing and list building. This way we can decrease the use of plugins. Increasing the number of plugins will cause to rise the database size.

5. Optimize the WordPress Database

WordPress is mainly written in PHP. So it is making use of the databases. Increasing database size will make your blog website a snail. We have a few seconds to impress our first- time visitors. So make sure to have a site with load speed at least under 2 seconds (1 second is excellent). If you don’t know how to optimize database, make sure you have WP- Optimize or WP- DB Manager in your plugin list. Both of them are good plugins and we can schedule optimizing tasks.

What do You Think?

There are some more tweaks to flash- load your website. You can enable lazy load effect for images and use a Content Delivery Network (CDN). There are so many WordPress resources like PHPMatters with which you can learn the utilization of it. Let me know your opinion about this tweaks after trying.

If you want to know more, you can also refer to some other speeding up suggestions.

Google SEO Algorithm Penalizes Sites with Doorway Pages

Google recently releases an search engine update to kill the websites with doorway pages that spamdex(spam-index) their databases. Google believes that these doorway pages are purposefully constructed more likely for search engines than for humans.

What are doorway pages?

Pages constructed with different domains and pages with different targeted keywords that funnel visitors to actual pages(with actual information) are called doorway pages. Spammers’ sole purpose of creating such sites is to manipulate the search engines to drive traffic to their actual informative page.

As we know, manipulating the search engine is strictly against the policies and so Google will take it seriously as a black-hat SEO practice thereby penalizing the site.

How doorway pages actually work?

When a visitor clicks through the search result(which is a doorway page) to access the information on that page(which is disguised), it will be automatically redirected to another page.

We have a long-standing view that doorway pages that are created solely for search engines can harm the quality of the user’s search experience. –Google

However, creating healthy doorway pages through permanent redirects that are friendly to search engines is allowed.

How doorway pages degrade user experience?

Whereas, webmasters using this black-hat strategy will use a <meta> tag or script redirection to send visitors to actual page is against Google polices.

For example, if Google shows the results of the same page with different masks(doorway pages) in SERP, user clicks on the first result and if he don’t gets any information desired for, will come back and click on 2nd result. If he finds the same irrelevant information, he will get frustrated and leaves Google.

Google wants to put an end to this and don’t wanted to loose traffic for other search engines.

Does your site have doorway pages, accidentally?

Every search engine algorithm update gives chills in the spine for any webmaster. Though you always follows Google webmaster guidelines, it is better to check if any flaws were made by mistake or accidentally in the past on your site.

Check if,
  • You have over optimized your site pages for search engines with multiple faces that affect your visitor's experience.
  • You have created mocking pages to optimize the original content page.
  • Content on your pages sorts out resulting in aggregation, as per location or product searched for.
  • You have created links to a particular page that is never linked to a menu or any other part of the site.
You can seek the help of webmaster help forums if needed. Also, please leave your thoughts about it.

No matter how good your content is, it won’t be able to attract the desired amount of traffic if you don’t publish on a regular basis. Search engines such as Google and Bing regard blogs which are published for relevant searches as a good resource. So, publishing high quality content on a daily basis should be your priority. Make it a point to post one or two blog posts in a week.

Utilize SEO friendly blog applications

Blogging platforms such as Word Press and Blogger are widely used by bloggers since they are search engine friendly. While selecting a blogging application, you need to keep in mind the title or keywords in the URL of blog post, and also edit meta tags to your post.

Add meta tags and descriptions to your blog posts

Meta tags and descriptions help search engines to have a clear idea about the subject a blog post is related to. Make sure that you use a simple language with appropriate keywords.

Make use of SEO friendly titles

You need to perform keyword analysis in order to find out the keyword which will help you to attract a substantial amount of traffic to your blog post. Keyword research tools will provide you with accurate information on the number of competitions and visits each keyword has. Frame the title accordingly using the keyword which has been attracting a high amount of traffic.

Use Google Maps or YouTube videos to enhance your content

Most of the visitors browse through a site within a span of seconds. In order to retain their interest in your blog post and create an instant impression in their minds, you should use Google Maps or YouTube videos in order to help them relate with your content. For example, if your blog is related to the real estate sector, using Google Maps to show the location of upcoming projects will help you to retain the interest of visitors over a longer time period than what you normally do.

Link your blog to the landing page of your site

Linking your blog posts to your website’s landing page will do you a world of good from the SEO perspective. Using these internal links, you will be able to generate leads from the incoming traffic.

Establish Google authorship for your blog posts

Website owners with Google Authorship for their blog posts are able to draw a greater amount of traffic in comparison to others. Once you are able to acquire authorship for the blog posts you share on Google, there will be a significant improvement in your web presence. Your blog posts will also appear more frequently in searches. So once you acquire authorship for the content you create, update your profile with your name, picture and Google+ information.

How to Choose a Perfect Title for a Blog Post?

No matter how good your article is and how better you wrote it, an appealing title will always be responsible for welcoming your readers. So the optimization should start from the title and then be proceeded to the rest of the article.

In the past search engines used to consider ‘title’ as a SEO signal which was later turned up on to the article’s quality now. Although, it is the ‘title’ that always attracts a human to click and come on to page to read. So, we need to create a ‘perfect title’ for a blog post and it should follow some rules. Please go through the following headlines and learn what is needed in choosing a perfect title.

choose-perfect-title

1. Perfect title? What are the things to consider?

A perfect title is no magic, it is just an search engine optimized piece of phrase to attract more human readers. There are certain things that should be followed while choosing a perfect title. They are as follows:

A perfect title should
  • Not exceed 55 characters of length
  • Be stuffed with main keyword
  • Be appealing to visitor/reader
  • Be as unique as possible
  • Not get out of context while choosing one

2. What is a keyword? and what is main keyword?

Another thing you should be aware of, is the term ‘keyword’. A ‘keyword’ is the term which people type-in to search something using a search engine. A ‘main keyword’ is nothing but the topic we are writing about.

Keywords play an important role in search engine traffic. The keywords that are mostly searched will bring good traffic for your blog. We can research and explore for the best keywords using different tools that are available on internet and I will introduce to you further.

3. Explore for best keywords

The best keywords are those which are mostly searched and that could bring good organic traffic for your blog.

The keywords that can bring conversions from visitors can also be considered as the best. The word ‘best’ can be seen in different perspectives and it depends on the type of blog you are maintaining and kind of visitors you are expecting.

One’s best can be another’s waste and one’s waste can be another’s best. Click on the highly recommended link and learn more about it.

We use internet trends and keyword suggestion tools to explore and research for the best keywords.

4. What are internet trends and keyword suggestion tools?

To choose the best keywords for a blog post, we take the help of some of the reliable tools online. They include tools that show internet trends and tools that help in researching and exploring the best keywords.

Google trends and AdWords Keyword Suggestion Tool are the best keyword research tools that are available on the internet.

Choosing the best keywords is not enough, they need to be optimized and inserted wisely on a page. Because search engines started out listing unnatural keyword stuffing and its density on the page already since past few years.

5. Keyword optimization? What makes it different from keyword exploring?

Sorting out the best performing keywords for your blog can’t complete the task. This is like gathering up all the tools to build something and forgetting to build it at all.

Optimization is how you build your blog friendly for readers and search engines as well. Optimizing keywords should be the second priority and the reader friendliness should take the first.

Exploring keywords is a just a part of the keyword optimization. Optimization includes both the best performing as well as least performing keywords in a perfect sync. Using only best ones might give a bad impression of your blog at search engines.

6. Importance of uniqueness

A title that is optimized may also not work out for you sometimes. The same keyword family you have chosen might also have been used by many other competitors of yours. So, you might need some extra booster than just an keyword optimized title.

What might it be? It is no green lantern from space shuttle, it is the piece of creativity using which you got to choose the title as unique as possible.

An unique and appealing title will make your blog post standout among the rest of the results in SERP(considering yours a quality blog post).

Summarizing

There is nothing like ready-made perfect title. The skill of creating one will come by experience of trying to do it. The readers of your blog will expect more regarding the content after entering your blog by clicking the title. So, take care and never neglect the content. It is what makes the impression to the readers though the title is too appealing to click through.

All the best! Happy blogging!

The Importance of Uniqueness in Choosing a Title for a Blog Post

The secret was however revealed. The bloggers who read my previous articles have come to know about keyword optimization and the formula in choosing a best title for a blog post.

If you are the only one who knew about it, you would have been benefited. But, how can you make the most of it while everyone else know about it?

You may need some more different strategies that would make your articles standout best among the rest. What it could be?

It is not a magic wand of Harry Potter, not even the ring of green lantern that you need. It is an ‘idea’ that makes your title unique from everyone else.

An idea? C’mon I have got a lot of ideas up there!

Yeah, of course you might have a bunch of ideas for life. But, are they good enough to make your blog posts standout best?(No offense! please don’t take this personal).

What I mean to say is, after knowing about keyword optimization, ever blogger would think of a similar title with the same keywords.

For e.g., Let us consider the currently trending keyword family of ‘PK’, the latest movie of Aamir Khan. If the bloggers want to write about the movie, the keywords that they would generally choose are,
  • PK movie review,
  • PK review,
  • PK,
  • PK deleted scenes,
  • PK collections,
  • PK wallpapers & posters download
  • and so on
And the titles that they like to choose looks very similar but stuffed with keyword. Inserting keywords in the title is a good practice but should be taken care of. If we talk about the common titles, they would look like as follows,
  • PK Movie Review: Movie Review, Trailers, Wallpapers
  • PK Hindi Movie Critic Review
  • PK Movie Review: Wallpapers, Story, Trailer at Times of India
  • Aamir Khan’s PK
  • and similar
(All those above titles are as per the results found on Google search. They are not my own creation for god sake)

If you notice, there are results from top authoritative sites like Times of India which are hard to compete(of course it will not happen always). Though you put your site on the top, people will choose to read from authoritative blogs and sites. That’s natural after all(you and I do the same too).

The thing that differentiates your site from those authoritative sites is uniqueness. If your site link has unique title, that would help you get users attention.

I have noticed an unique title ‘Why Aamir Khan’s PK is Grabbing Eyeballs’ among the rest of the results. Compared to the word ‘review’, this title is so pulling and also not existed or might have less densely existed on the web.

Must remember advice

Choosing a title that is appealing is good but, you should make sure to satisfy the visitors eagerness with content. Just think if the title Why Aamir Khan’s PK is Grabbing Eyeballs’ is misleading visitors with out-of-context- content, would you be visiting the website again in future?

If your blog have no quality & title relevant content. there is no use of optimizing keywords, title and everything else on your blog.

By the way…

Unique title along with optimized keywords would surely make your site stand out best among the rest. By the way, writing unique titles with relevant quality content for a web index analysis time period would improve the blog’s authority and rank on the web.

Hope that answers your question! Till next time!

Why Should You Optimize the Keywords and How?

Optimizing keywords might seem same as exploring best ones for any newbie. I also had walked through this confusion phase in the past. Later came to know the difference between them precisely.

Optimizing keywords includes choosing those that bring high traffic and the ones that bring less traffic as well. It is the process of making your website/blog more friendly to search engines.

Making website friendly to search engines? Is that allowed?

The answer is simply ‘Yes!’. Making website/blog friendly to search engines is allowed as far as it is friendly enough for your readers.

That means, a blog that has no respect for readers and those which only worship search engines will never be cared at all. In fact, search engines will consider them as if they are trying to manipulate their search algorithms. So, they are also called with a name ‘black hats’. The search engines normally hate black hats(the manipulators) and so will ban them forever or de-ranks the website(s).

On the flip side, a website/blog that respects its readers by providing great content, navigation and other on-site sophistications that’ll make them feel good and happy for visiting your website will ever be honored by being picked up top in SERP(Search Engine Results Page).

What’s the need of keyword optimization? Is content not enough?

Yes of course! the content is the king, but it surely need the army to make the kingdom stronger. The better & optimized keywords makes the army for your king.

Because, I have seen many wonderful bloggers quitting blogging for no better reason than for just not getting traffic from search engines. Isn’t that disastrous? Can you imagine the blogosphere with only search engine disciples and not so great content everywhere? So need keyword optimization.

How to optimize keywords?

Here comes the interesting part of the article. Let’s learn the difference between the exploring best keywords and optimizing them.

Exploring best keywords is just finding out which terms are getting better traffic where as optimizing them includes one or more best keywords as a combination.

Let us suppose that we are writing an article on ‘XBox 360 red ring of death’. If we explore the keyword suggestions on it, we would be shown something like this,

keyword-planner-stats

The keyword ‘Xbox 360 red ring of death’ and its related terms nearly get 1million hits per month.

The ‘Xbox 360 red ring of death’ alone gets 2,400 average monthly searches and with ‘low’ search competition. If we could integrate it with the high competitive keywords, we could balance the equation in the competition.

If we explore the related terms, we could find the high competitive keywords like as shown below,

searching-high-demand-keywords

searching-high-demand-keywords

Though the monthly searches are a little low for the above 1st screenshot, the search competition for it is high. That means the keyword is ‘valuable’ and using it on your blog will increase the value of ad spaces, if you are using any contextual advertising programs like Google AdSense for monetizing.

Also the chances of getting shown in top of SERP will be high as the fellow webmasters and bloggers who are after traffic would not focus on it well.

Then our optimized title would be like “Repair Xbox 360 red ring of death”. But if we look at the monthly average stats, it shows a bit low stats than the previous one i.e., 1 million.

lowered-stats

You may not get the best average monthly searches for the exact combination of the keywords, but will surely get for the inner keywords. We have to make sure of it by exploring more deeply into it.

Inner keywords?

Inner keywords are the terms that lie within a keyword. These inner keywords would bring the traffic that you are not actually expecting.

Let’s check out the inner keywords that we have got for our optimized title.

“Repair Xbox 360” with 8 million searches

8million-reach-xbox360

and “Repair red ring of death” with nearly 4 million searches

4million-reach-xbox-360

Totally making it to 13 million(1M+8M+4M=13M) searches per month.

Over to you

Such way, an optimized keyword(s) will show the impact on all sides. The art of choosing one will come by experience of using keyword planner tool and by blogging. Wish you all the best and hope it helped you understand how to optimize the keywords that you use on the blog.

Don’t hesitate to share your thoughts about it in comments below!

Why Should You Know About Internet Trends & Keyword Suggestion Tools?

Knowing what is keyword and why it is used is not enough for a blogger but anyone. It is important to know the best performing keywords as well. To know them, you need to have a little knowledge about internet trends and keyword suggestion tools.

Internet trends? Keyword suggestion tools? Does such tool really exist?

Yes, they do exist! You no need to spy on your friends’ computers to know what is being searched the most on search engines.

Really? Are they reliable?

Yes they are reliable. Not because they are used by me or some other professional blogger. It is because they are provided by Google, whom you would try to impress in your whole blogging life.

I would like to introduce to you, Google Trends and Keyword Planner Tool.

What is ‘Google Trends’?

Google trends was initially introduced to compare the search intensity of two search terms. You can compare two search terms and can choose the right topic to blog for that season.

Google trends was inactive in the past and when bloggers noticed that it has not been updated since November 2006, Google woke up and updated it from then.

Now, Google updates trends on hourly basis. Thanks to bloggers for taking the initiative and making it alive again.

Look at the following example of how Google trends can be used to analyze most trending topics,

google-trends

If you see the above graph, the term ‘Christmas’ has got hike from the middle of September(roughly) as it is the Christmas season coming in December. If we had searched for it in the middle of May or June, it could have been beaten by the term ‘Independence day’. See the screenshot of the stats by Google trends.

hike-for-independeceday

By this, we can say that the internet trends depend on,
  1. The season
  2. Time &
  3. Festivals
That means the trends that you choose may show adverse affect on the future traffic of your blog or website. Thought, this is not totally true.

Let us suppose that you started a new blog focusing on ‘Black Friday’. Google trends can help you make the most of it till that day or another day after that. What would be the future of the blog till next year?

Unlike the above example, let us suppose that you are writing a review of Apple iPhone 6 which is trending today. It won’t bring you harm or loss though it would not trend in future as people would be searching for it somehow through the year and later. Hope you got my point!

This is how Google trends will be helpful. But it would be more helpful to an event bloggers(Who creates a blog focusing an event to make profit for that season, For e.g., ‘IPL Cricket’ blog in IPL season is an event blog) rather than the regular ones.

Though it is, Google trends can also be wisely used for non-event or semi-event blogs, like as ‘iPhone 6 example’ in above lines. So that the semi-event blogger can make the most of the event for that season and also after the season(which an pure event blogger cannot).

What is ‘Keyword Planner Tool’?

So, you’ve got an idea of internet trends and how Google trends can be helpful. How do you think you can elevate the trending topic on your blog, where there are many other high authority blogs that dominate yours?

‘Keyword’ answers this toughest question. Implementing best & unique keywords in your blog posts can put your blog competing with the high authority blogs.

Though keywords, content will always be given priority by search engines. So when I mean keywords, I consider you are writing a wonderful article

How to know what are the best and unique keywords?

That is what the ‘Keyword Planner Tool’ is useful for. But actually, keyword planner tool was actually meant for Google AdWord advertisers to analyze and learn the popularity of the keywords in the search engine. Later, bloggers and webmasters started using it for keyword optimization.

Let’s get to know about the keyword planner tool briefly before we get to know about keyword optimization.

To use AdWords Keyword Planner Tool,
  1. Go to https://adwords.google.com/KeywordPlanner and login with your Google account credentials.
  2. Under Search for new keyword and ad group ideas > under Your product or service, type in the keyword you wanted to focus on in the article.
  3. Scroll down and under Targeting, choose the location you want to target audience of.
  4. You can also choose Language, Google (with images) to target specific people.
  5. Don’t care about Negative Keywords as it is only useful for advertisers.
  6. Under Date range, you can set the dates to view the popularity of the keywords
  7. in between.
Read this article to learn how to search best keywords as it would help you in choosing best keywords.

Hope you understand why you should be knowing about internet trends and keyword suggestion tools while blogging now. Happy blogging :)

What do you know about the term ‘Keyword’ in SEO?

Bloggers and webmasters chant the term ‘Keyword‘ 1000 times a day. Because it is what that helps their website get global exposure. Taking from a beginner to expert,  knowingly and unknowingly everyone would start discussing about the term ‘Keyword’. Today I would like to take you on a tour about ‘Keyword’ and how it is used in SEO.

Before we get started, I want you forget for second that you are a beginner or an expert. Just read it relaxed and later decide your blogger designation for yourself.

So, what is this keyword?

Before we directly dive into a frozen ice lake, let’s break it up somewhat so that the impact of understanding won’t be sharp enough to kill your interest for blogging.

The legacy
When the internet was born, there were no search engines on the web. We had to directly go to the web address, the IP address of the  website to access the information from the other computers on the network. Later the naming system was invented and it is what we are using now.

It is the reason why the name’s www.amfsatech.com not some xxx.xx.xx.xx

That’s short, about the internet. Let’s know about search engines too.

Search engines are nothing but websites that are programmed to search the web. They index the ‘new’ on the web and update their index databases with the help of crawlers.

Crawlers?

Yeah! crawlers are again programs intended to work for search engines that search for and update the presence of content on the web. Different search engines have different crawlers of their own. Each search engine crawler’s algorithm is different from others and it is the secret of their success as well.

So what? Is this how search engine works?

The answer is ‘Yes’ and also a ‘No’. The thing with crawlers you just read in the above lines is just half working of a search engine. The second half is what the search engines is meant for.

The second half works when we type something to search in it.

Search engines process the ‘terms’ we type-in to search and match them with the content of indexes in their databases. If they are found, the relevant hyperlinks to that content are shown.

That means when we type something like  this, ‘how to create a website’, the search engine shows the results that matches the words given in the search box i.e., it shows up the results matching the words of ‘how to create a website’. The words we type to search in the search box are called ‘keywords’.

keyword

That’s a long introduction for Keyword right? Yeah! I know so too. Take a sip of energy drink and continue reading. Because the show is not yet ended.

I’m just kidding! that’s all for an introduction tutorial about ‘keyword’! We’ll see more about keyword and how to choose the right ones to improve the website traffic in further tutorials. Stick to Amfas Tech social profiles for updates.

Things to Consider While Choosing a Title for a Blog Post

Do you know that title of a blog post is the door to your article for your readers? So it seems like you know it well. One should not leave by not knocking your door when they are passing by.

Do you know how to decorate the ‘door’ appealing to the reader as well as search engines? What are things to consider while choosing a title for a blog post? Read further to know.

Limit title to 55 characters

Short titles break the ice faster than the lengthy ones. This is not just a kind of KISS(Keep It Simple & Short) metric but a reader’s psychological tweak.

Why only 55 characters?

If this is the question you have in mind right now, you are in sync with what I wanted to say in this article.

Search engines only show 55 characters in SERP(Search Engine Results Page). The excess characters after 55 would be shown as “…”

Though they show them with continuity dots, search engine will still consider them. But, for the reader it will still not be so appealing. Take an example of following screenshots:

lengthy-title-serp

The title of the blog post is greater than 55 characters in the above screenshot and so it shows ‘...’ at the end. Though it is shown in the 1st place in SERP, it is not that appealing to the reader. This might take effect on the organic traffic.

short-title-serp

The title of the post in the above screenshot is with in 55 characters and as you can see it more appealing than the above shown lengthy title. Isn’t it?

Don’t forget to insert the main keyword

It is ok if the title can attract only the subscribers of your blog, but how can you get the exposure of global audience? Yeah! search engines is the only way(social medias apart).

Search engines only can send organic traffic to your blog. When you type something in search engine, it looks for the same word/phrase on the web and shows you the relevant results.

For example, if you type the term ‘Android lollipop 5.0 phones’ in Google

search-keyword-matched-results

Every search engine strives hard to give user the best matched information for the ‘keywords’ he type in. So, it is recommended to insert a keyword that you are focusing the topic on, just like ‘Android lollipop 5.0’ in our example.

Choose an appealing title

Choosing a title that is just search engine friendly is not enough. It should be appealing to the visitor. Though you blog has 1000+ subscribers or you have optimized the title to appear top in the SERP, people will not like to click on it if it is not appealing.

For an example, ‘Nokia Lumia 535 Price, Specifications and Availability’ is just search engine optimized but not as appealing as ‘Why should you buy Nokia Lumia 535?’ If you could notice, I have used the same keyword i.e., ‘Buy Nokia Lumia 535’ in both the titles but the second one gets more exposure than the first.

Make sure the title is as unique as possible

‘Uniqueness’ is also the one of the major factors in placing your blog title at the top of the search engine results page. A title has as many chances as it is unique in getting placed in top of SERP.

Here is the conclusion formula for a perfect title:

(short+keyword stuffed+appealing+unique) x title = top position in SERP ~ Success of the blog.

Capitalize the first letters

That’s all about choosing a perfect title, how would you make it so appealing(I say it ‘appealing+’)?

Capitalize the first letters of the words except the prepositions in the title. Now, tell me which is more appealing? the title like this: “Things to Consider While Choosing a Title for a Blog Post” or this: “Things to consider while choosing a title for a blog post”?

Don’t get out of context

Yes! Of course, a perfect title is necessary for a blog post to get much exposure. But, it should not get out of the context.

As you see, many links with appealing titles will not have the expected stuff on the page, rather it would have some crappy content with spammy content.

Yes, I said it spam! Because, choosing irrelevant titles that will have unsolicited content is considered as spam on the web. Isn’t it?

So, choose wisely!

One second!

These are the the basic things to remember while choosing a good title that could bring you traffic not only from your subscribers but also from search engines as well. Always remember that the content you write for the readers is the king and it rules the web world. This is what search engines believe from the beginning and will be.

All the best!

How I Could Recover Local Search Traffic in Two Months

We have already seen how much toll it took on the blogs and website when Google released its new local search algorithm lately in the month of July of this year. Every webmaster was perplexed and local businesses are also got effected.

Amfas Tech also caught some heat earlier but we could successfully recover our local traffic by now. Read on to know and learn the strategies we’ve implemented to recover our local traffic.

Talking about the versions of the algorithms that Google has been introducing all these years, Hummingbird and Local Search Algorithm(unofficially called ‘Pigeon’) are the most effective algorithms so far. We’ve seen how a Hummingbird algorithm works in contrast with the Pigeon in the past and so we already knew that local search algorithm is as effective as hummingbird.

Local Search Algorithm was introduced to facilitate the Google user feel more realistic and comfortable with the results fetched from the local visibility.

For example, let us suppose I was searching for an ice cream parlor near by my location. I would be shown the ice cream parlors with in my location when I start typing in as you can see in the following screenshot.

google-local-search

What I have been shown may not be ‘the –best’ shops around the globe but they are nearer to me and that matters all. I won’t be able to get access to some random shop situated some where in California with lot of optimizations for their business listing set up.

Though it may show me the best shops, I cannot get access to them. What if happens in the case of hospitals-search too? Probably the patient will be playing with angles in heaven by the time he reaches the best hospital shown in some human coded search engine.

Google don’t want ‘Google’ still look like an human coded search engine. Years passed since internet was born. It wants it to become better with auto intelligence like locality detection, relevancy and accuracy. So is local search algorithm.

What I did to recover from local search impact?

I have read, watched and observed websites and local listings of businesses keenly. All the experts said was not getting through my mind actually but it left me with clues.

Specified address and location
The thing is that I never specified the address of my blog services availability to my readers on my contact us page which I did it later after knowing. Here is what I did.
As I did in the early days of local search algorithm hit, tit haven't showed me any result.

Kept writing more quality articles
Any algorithm hit never backed me down from blogging. So it is. I kept on writing more and more quality articles of at least 800+ words each with ample of useful information for readers.

It increased my authority over my blog in blogosphere. Remember quality matters, not just writing words.

Panda 4.1 helped me
The spam weed out algorithm panda version 4.1 helped my blog get positioned higher in search results.  The removal of links from spammy blogs and websites have automatically pushed up my blog links in SERP.

Death of PageRank helped me
I was expecting a PageRank hike from 2-higher like 4 this time as I am much confident about the content I have been posting all these months consistently. Though the current PR 2 help me get ranked higher in SERP, the death of it took toll on the gap between the two consecutive PR updates and that gap helped me.

Penguin 3.0 helped me
The latest version of Penguin 3.0 weeded out those blogs that have crossed Google webmaster guidelines. Two weeks right after Penguin 3.0, I could observe the hike in daily sessions by 400% amazingly.

local-traffic-recovery

How can I say it is local traffic?

I have seen no change in the international traffic and they are consistent since the hike. All I can see is the engagement of local traffic within the country.

traffic-from-india
No strategy I followed is wasted. Every step I took in restoring the traffic locally improvised my tricks level by level and Google helped me a lot in this regard.

You can also give it a try and see if my strategies are working out for you too. Google predators are on loose hunting hungry the prey. Don’t become one, follow Google webmaster guidelines and always stay on safe side.
