Remove Windows.old Folder After Upgrading to Windows 10

Now that you have upgraded to Windows 10 from your previous version of Windows operating system. This upgrading process will not only keep your files and programs from your previous versions but also keeps some of the OS files in a folder named Windows.old.

Windows.old folder takes a lot of memory of at most 20 GB(depends) roughly. Neither the old OS files are useful nor the memory taken by it. Literally, the memory taken by the Windows.old folder is a dump unless you want to downgrade back to your older Windows sometime in near future.

Note: If you wanted to test the new Windows 10 through the upgrade for sometime and decide later whether to have it continued, do not delete the Windows.old folder. It is only backup that helps you switch back to previous version easily.

However, 20 GB is not a small chunk of memory to leave it off. Those who really care about this amount of space better take a step forward to delete Windows.old folder.

Windows 10 is really an improved version of Windows OS and you won’t find any program incompatible issues with the software that was installed on your computer. So, I think you won’t find a necessity to downgrade back to older version again. It is always your choice anyway.

Removing Windows.old folder safely

Selecting the folder from the drive and hitting ‘Delete’ button is not the safe way of deleting the Windows.old folder. Using of command prompt to delete the folder is also not suggested.

To remove it safely from your system drive, better do it from ‘Disk Cleanup’ utility.

Step 1: Go to This PC > Right-click on Local Disk (C:) > Properties > Disk cleanup.

This won’t show up Windows.old folder in the ‘Files to delete’ options.

Step 2: Click on ‘Clean up system files’ button and that will scan for the unnecessary files on the drive with administrator rights.

This will then show up the Windows.old folder in the ‘files to download’ options.

Step 3: Select the ‘Previous Windows installation(s)’ folder and click ‘Ok’. It will then show you a warning saying that you can’t downgrade to the previous version of windows once deleted.

Step 4: Click ‘Ok’ to proceed. It will start the cleaning process right then.

That’s it. Check your Local Disk (C): now. You’ll find the partition regaining the 20 GB(appx).

*Local Disk(C): is considered as the operating system installed drive in this demonstration.

What You Need to Know About Caret Browsing in Microsoft’s Edge Browser

Microsoft, after giving up on the internet explorer, the long stayed companion for Windows operating systems have introduced a new browser with a name ‘Edge’ with Windows 10. As they have been saying that their new Spartan project is going to bring a light weight web browser, have brought a really new browser with really needed simple features.

Edge has an option in Settings > Advanced settings called caret browsing. It allows you to copy down text on the webpage with your keyboard. It might not sound familiar but, there is something else you need to know about it.

All about Edge’s caret browsing

According to Wikipedia,

caret navigation is a kind of keyboard navigation where a caret (also known as a ‘text cursor’, ‘text insertion cursor’, or ‘text selection cursor’) is used to navigate within a text document.

When you are copying down the text from the webpages on Google Chrome, you cannot put your cursor somewhere and just copy text by using Shift+Arrow Keys. Some part of the text, say a word at least must be selected in order to activate the Shift+Arrow Keys combo.

Where as in Microsoft’s Edge browser, if ‘Always use caret browsing’ is turned on, you can get the blinking cursor (caret cursor) by just using F7 to toggle the functionality on/off.

Using it, you can just click to place you cursor anywhere on the webpage and use Shift+Arrow Keys combo to select the text.

Mozilla Firefox has has the same functionality but, it won’t display a blinking cursor on the page. You can still just click in the middle of the text on a webpage and copy the text freely.

Watch this video demonstrating the caret browsing functionality.

Caret browsing also allow us to copy text in forward of backward direction using the navigation keys (arrows keys). Google chrome lacks this feature yet. You can get this feature by installing this chrome extension which is not so cool compared to Firefox and Edge browsers.

This somehow proofs the work of Microsoft on Edge all these days. We should appreciate them for making the default browser of the operating system really usable.

Microsoft Renames Skype as iMessage in Windows 10

Windows 10 will not have Skype. Isn’t that shocking? Wait don’t give yourself a heart stroke. Microsoft renames the most lovable multi-purpose chat application as iMessage along with the new UI.

This might sound surprising but it is true, Microsoft is integrating Skype with a new name in Windows 10. It seems like Microsoft is bringing back the in-built messaging application that earlier versions of Windows 8 had. Unfortunately, the software giant discontinued the message app with Windows 8.1 update leaving users a conclusion of short lived app of all times.

The new iMessage in Windows 10 allows you to chat, make video or voice call your contacts on Skype. Another interesting feature is that it will maintain a sync between the devices. You can continue the chat after leaving it in the middle on another device.

You would give a double exclamation if I say that the UI looks pretty similar to messaging application in Apple’s OSX with the same rounded profile pictures and dual panel white interface.

Don’t you think Microsoft is adapting the Job’s dreamy design?

Respect to Steve Jobs for his amazing designs!!

Windows 10 is Free to Upgrade for Windows 7,8 and 8.1 Users

Microsoft at Windows 10 event shares the good news to Windows 7,8 and 8.1 users about the giving away of free upgrade to Windows 10.

Windows users will get this free upgrade valid for one year. Upgrading again for free after that will give them a lifetime upgrade for that device.

Microsoft is looking forward to increase their userbase for their future versions of the software. May be this time, they don’t wanted to loose old, loyal customers for a whole new technological advancement they have brought in the form of metro tiles.

As said in the past in the release event technical preview, Windows 10 is going to be the OS for all devices. So, the free upgrade will be valid for mobile devices also.

Is Microsoft afraid of Mac OS?

Windows 10 looks and feels a little like Mac OS. Those who had their hands on it by now would have noticed it already. The implementation of endless(frameless) windows with fade-in and out effect and shadow effect for windows shows as if Microsoft is following the Mac OS design trends.

The giving away of free upgradation for their ‘new age’ operating system for their old customers also shows the same.

What do you think?

Microsoft Skips a Generation, Releases Windows 10 Technical Preview: Let’s see what it has got

Finally, the gossiped new operating system of Microsoft, the latest version, Windows 10 was announced recently by the company’s vice presidents, Joe Belfiore and Terry Myerson at an event space in San Francisco. Terry starts the event very cool and spells out the new name for the next version of the Windows operating system in 3 minutes.

As per Terry, the new Windows was thought to be named like as XBox One i.e., as ‘Windows 1’. As it was taken by the predecessor geniuses in the past, the new Windows is named the ‘Windows 10’ as the incremental product of Windows 8.1.

Windows 10 represents the first step of whole new generation of windows. It unlocks new experiences for our customers new ways to work, play and connect. Windows 10 embodies what a consumer and an enterprise customers are demanding and what we will deliver.”  says Terry in the event.

Windows 10 will work compatible with any device i.e., irrespective of the size of screen and the usage. It is made for those who use regular mouse and keyboard and also for those who use touch and gestures. This might sound like Windows 8 but got a lot of difference in the words of Terry Myerson.

Watch the video of Windows 10 launch below:

After talking to many Windows users and developers over the globe, Microsoft found the new requirements for their new operating system which helped in making Windows 10 a total comprehensive operating system, with all-in-one usage.
  • Features of Windows 10:
  • Enterprise value
  • Familiar, compatible and productive
  • Modern management
  • Customized store
  • Protects corporate data
Windows 10 seems concerned about the enterprises as many of them have not yet been upgraded with Windows 8 yet due to lack of adaptability in the technological changes.

What Windows 10 has got?

Just like the every new version of the Windows operating system, Windows 10 has also got a new look and feel in using it. Joe demonstrates the new features of Windows 10 in the event and here are they for your quick reference.

It has got new start menu
The rivalry started with Windows 8 where the start menu was made app tiles. Later, as we all know, Microsoft has came up with new version of windows 8, the Windows 8.1 with the traditional start menu restored to satisfy the common users too as the new technical advancements could only impressed geeks and developers so far.

In Windows 10, Microsoft has mixed up the start menu with tiles on one pane and traditional start menu on another.

The start menu is no new if you are much familiar with Windows 7 and 8 so far. You can drag and drop the applications from the traditional start menu to live tiles in Windows 10.

Windows 10 allows to have full control over the tiles. You can resize the tiles by simply right clicking on them.

It has got new search
The windows search feature was juggled between the versions of windows 7 and windows 8. You can search for the files and apps from the start menu in windows 7 where as you can search the same using windows charms bar in windows 8.

It has got new app development platform
Unlike other predecessor versions of windows operating system, Windows 10 has got new app development platform using which developers can develop apps that will work on any kind of Windows 10 device. This reduces the effort of making apps for different devices and also the cost of making.

It has got title bar for store apps
Closing apps on windows is an annoying task for new windows 8 users. One should had to drag it to bottom or press Alt+F4 to close an store application so far. Windows 10 comes with an added title bar for Windows store apps that can be minimized, maximized and closed just like any other windows application. The store apps can be resized like as we do for the regular windows applications as well.

It has got new task view button on taskbar
Windows 10 has been added with a new feature, the task view button to view all the running tasks in a light box themed view.

It has got powerful multi-tasking
Multi-tasking on Windows operating systems has been improving from version to version. Windows 10 allows users to have better multi-tasking feature by snapping more than two apps on the same screen(unlike windows 7). In windows 7, you can only snap two applications to right, left or top.

It has got better task switching
Most of the people while working with keyboards would like to switch among the apps using Alt+Tab key combination. It is improved and outsmarts the windows 8’s background color filled tasks list to aero and light box list in Windows 10.

It has got beautiful command prompt
Using command prompt has never been changed so far along with the versions of operating system until Windows 10. You can use general keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V on command prompt that makes easy and handy to use it. You can select the text on the prompt window by pressing Ctrl+Shift along with the arrow keys on the keyboard.

What else it has got?

Windows 10 looks like it has got enough tweak jobs that are wanted by the majority of the Windows 7 and 8 users. It continues support for touch devices as told earlier before. It has also got charms bar and the all touch and swipe shortcuts to access the new features on touch based device.

Windows 8 and 8.1 also have got as much negative reputation as positive one. The difficulty in using on non-touch based devices made people downgrade to windows 7 in many cases I have seen personally and in news. Microsoft have made a quick step to recover the fallen crown by transforming windows 7 and 8 into one and named it Windows 10. The adaptability and flexibility to use it are likely to buzz the Microsoft’s name in the news again. Hoping for every thing good from Windows 10.
