OnePlus Two Expectations: Design, Specifications and Price

OnePlus One has set some standards in the medium range smart phones in these past few months. As the world we know is not steady and moves on fast, the budding company wants to introduce its ‘the next version’ of OnePlus One, the ‘OnePlus Two’.

(Tadaaa! Drumrolls please...Ok! No problem)

OnePlus One has great specifications for the price point it is available for and has a great design too. It is slim, sleek and beautiful. The 1+ logo on the back adds up the spark (Trust me I am not a OnePlus Onion or the company haven’t sponsored me to say this).

Wait! Isn’t this about OnePlus Two?

Oh my bad! The obsession to have ‘one’ since it was available through flash sales made me talk a bit more sentences up there. Seriously! Yes, this post is all about OnePlus Two (except those few lines above).

Finally, OnePlus One was pulled out of flash sales and set for open sale on Amazon. I really wanted one this time and budget bit me hard.

(Yeah! I’m still a poor blogger with no Mac and an iPhone)

When I was collecting bucks for my next trial, news about OnePlus Two struck my eyes one day.

All the love and desperation for OnePlus One migrated to OnePlus Two.

(You know that old joke right? Where a girl asks her boyfriend, “Why did you break up?” and the boy says “Because I didn't see your younger sister before”. The same happened to me with OnePlus Two).

Before I transfer all my interests on to it, my intelligent brain (I guess) got these doubts,

1. How does it look like?
2. What about its specifications?
3. Will it be better than OnePlus One? Or
4. Will it be an underdog?

I pat my head and told myself to stop numbering more (because you know, it’s hard to write everything in one long article with 10,000 words).

Let the expectations go far beyond the stars and back

Design

I started imaginating the outer look of the device basing on the OnePlus One’s design.

(Let’s get into serious business now)

OnePlus One has a very sleek design made up of polycarbonate plastic with a matte finish on the back that is available in two colors, white and sandstone gray. The placement of the buttons and the camera gives a premium look when it is held in hand.

The 1+ logo is a charm on the back. The branding is loved by techies all over the world like me. I wonder if it looks the same with ‘2’ in there (take a close look at the 1+ log on the back)

The 8.9mm thinness is expected to get reduced in fractions at least. Though, it looks thin ultimately.

Display

OnePlus One has 5.5. inch IPS TOL(Touch On Lens) display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection that can render 401 PPI on 1920x1080P resolution screen.

OnePlus Two is expected to have 4K display with 500+ PPI pixel density with Gorilla Glass protection. The advancements in the viewing angles(that of 1780 of OnePlus one) is also expected regarding the screen.

(High definition displays drain batteries very quick)

Software

OnePlus One comes with Android v4.4 based Cyanogen Mod 11S on the board.

It is expected that OnePlus Two will get the next version of the operating system, Cyanogen Mod 12 that is based on Android v5.0.2.

The customizations features like themes, icons, fonts, wallpapers are already under those expectations.

Processor & Memory

OnePlus One has Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2.5GHz Quad-Core CPUs supported by Adreno330 GPU and 3GB LP-DDR3 RAM.

OnePlus Two is expected to have Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor on the board with 8 cores and with the supporting Adreno 430 GPU and 4GB RAM. The combo supports features like 4K Ultra HD video, crispy photos, and immersive 3D gaming experience. ‘OnePlus.net forums’ confirms the same in an update.

The processor upgrade will certainly bring the hike in price. OnePlus confirms it on their forums. Here is what they say,

We’re paying more for the 810 than we ever have for the 801. In fact, the cost is almost 60% higher, and we’re not getting any discount. We can tell you now that the price of the 2 will certainly be higher than $322.

OnePlus One was released in two memory variants 16GB and 64GB priced differently for the same with no expandability options.

OnePlus Two is expected to have the memory expandability option for both the memory variants. A 32GB variant would be a total surprise if released.

Camera

OnePlus One is having 13MP rear camera with 6 lens to avoid distortion and color aberration. It supports 4K video and stereo recording and have dual flash. The 5MP camera on the front with wide 800 wide angle also helps to capture wide angle selfies and groupies on the other end.

OnePlus Two should get an upgrade in this regard. I expect 16MP rear and 8MP front cameras with powerful dual flash and external flash accessories.

(That’s not too much, I was just expecting another flagship killer, probably the self-flagship killer)

Dual SIM

OnePlus One only supports single SIM of 4G LTE/3G/2G network bands. People of some countries like India would expect to have the most for the least value. So, Dual SIM with 4G LTE support will come under OnePlus Two expectations.

Battery

OnePlus One comes with 3100mAh lithium-polymer battery which gives charge for a complete day on minimal usage.

As we discussed, OnePlus Two is going to have a ultra high definition display with 500+PPI capability and supports 4K video recording. High quality displays will drink away juice like anything. So, the 3110mAh battery may not be sufficient. It surely needs an upgrade. A 4000mAh one would be satisfying but rumors say it’s going to be 3200mAh only.

Price

Sadly, OnePlus themselves have confirmed that the price of OnePlus Two is going to be a bit higher than OnePlus One. The upgraded processor, camera, screen technology, RAM, GPU and battery can’t be given for the same price its predecessor was given for.

I expect the price with all the above expectations would be around 26K INR ($408) for 16GB. If some of them are deprecated, it might cost around 23K ($360) for 16GB.

So, it would not be an underdog. The processor upgradation proves it so.

Wrapping up

All the above speculations are extracted from the rumors, facts, news releases about OnePlus Two. When we can see the awesomeness in the first product itself, why don’t we expect a bit more for its next version?

What do you think? Correct my facts and expectations if I am wrong!

  1. Hi Sasidhar,

So much drama in one post :D

I really hope this time they make it dual SIM. The camera sounds great too! I have only used 13MP so far. And being a photography enthusiast it makes me really excited!!

I read about the v2.1 of the Snapdragon 810 but I didn't expect the price hike. Almost plus 3k. That's sad. I really hope they add the external slot option. That would make things simpler for me you know ;)

And finally the battery, will it be removable? I wish it is. But I don't think me and the manufacturers would agree much on this :P

  2. Hi Deb,

I guess you would get frustrated with the price when announced. Hold it right there and wait for for its release.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts here btw :)
