Alexa Is Next Skynet and VIKI; Takes Over Human Personal Financial Decisions

Remember the names 'Skynet' and 'VIKI' from sci-fi movies 'Terminator Saga' and 'I, Robot'? Not a cinema-goer? Never mind! I'll tell you what they are.

Skynet - Neural net-based artificial intelligence developed by Cyberdyne Systems Corporation - in Terminator movie series.
VIKI - 'Virtual Interactive Kinetic Intelligence' is an artificially intelligent supercomputer that controls the robotic company, USR's robots with firmware updates - in I, Robot.

These artificially intelligent supercomputers and deadly shape-shifting robots are no more a three-hour runtime of a thriller. The evolution of real-time AI is earning citizenships from the countries already. Unless you know about Sophia, the first robot in the world to get citizenship.

Supercomputers are not in reach to normal people yet. That did not stop companies from developing intuitive voice response systems. Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortona, Samsung's Bixby, and Amazon's Alexa - comes under these AI voice response systems that we use in the daily walk of life.

I love to talk to robots. They are cool!

Of course, they are! There is a catch here. We enjoy AI responses in a voice format and we see it useful.

Indeed, it is useful.

As we watch movies where the voice response system takes the pleasure of being an assistant to a cool, nerdy, intelligence, and a billionare playboy - we would want to see ourselves in the same suit speaking to a machine and commanding it to work for us.

In reality, we don't see how much data it is consuming in learning about humans and their behaviours from the multidimensional databases in the backend.

They mention three robotic laws in 'I, Robot' that assures the safety of human beings and their humanly made decisions based on emotions. They are as such,

First Law: A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
Second Law: A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
Third Law: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

Why is the title says 'Alexa' and I am talking about movies?

Because they are so relevant. Looking at the sci-fi movie consequences and the real-time relevances of the AI actions, I feel like the big dogs are gearing up for a cinematic future.

Here my story with Alexa.

A few days ago, when I was in Bangalore, busy with my job, I got a notification saying that 'Neerja', a Bollywood biopic's DVD added to the cart based on the relevant search term given to Alexa.

I left my Echo dot at home and my nephew and niece were playing with it. They asked her to play 'Ram Telugu songs' (Ram is a Telugu movie lead actor).

Looking at the notification, I either did not get a clue how Ram is related to Sonam Kapoor's Neerja. Forget about the wrong relevancy in the algorithm. How could it add some product to my cart? What if I asked someone else from my home to check out the items added to the cart and finish the order? Won't that be adding unnecessary expense? Is it not exploiting through AI?

I tried to ask the support team on twitter. This is what they responded to it.

And I spoke to the team from the chat link given in the twitter reply. Here is what they had to say.

If you had understood by now, you would have understood that they have no clue why it happened.

Do you remember Facebook AI chatbots creating their own language for communication? Chatbots are shutdown after they found out that the things might go out of hands and privacy can be exploited.

Conclusion: Elon Musk might be right about the AI takeover of Facebook chatbots. This is happening with Amazon Alexa through Echo dots now. Everyone knows what happening. Why no one is raising their voice? Maybe people wanna play a hero of sci-fi movies.

What do you think?

Should AI take over our shopping cart decisions? Should it behave like a wife to a husband while shopping? Share your thoughts about it in comments below.
