Xiaomi Mi5 is designed with a ceramic metal body with glossy finish. The phone looks 7.25mm thin and premium in hand. The design looks familiar but a physical button which looks as of Samsung’s is added on the front. It might also be the finger print sensor as we cannot see any signs of it on the back panel of the phone. The back panel is clean and the camera along with dual tone LED flash are moved on to the top corner. The phone feels lighter in hand weighing 129gms though having the 3D glass on the back and very good battery of 3000mAh.

Mi5 comes with 5.15 inch IPS Full HD display of 1080p resolution with an addition of 4 more LEDs to the normal 12-LED display making it a 16-LED display for better brightness and contrast management. The screen has very thin/no bezel at the sides giving it a feel of endless screen experience. You can see better Sunlight Display technology with Mi5 as the contrast will be adjusted as per the pixel level.

Xiaomi Mi5 differs not only in specifications but also in design slightly. The basic version (both 32GB and 64GB variants) comes with shiny back cover and the Pro-version (128GB UFS 2.0) is equipped with a ceramic version.

The processing capability of Mi5 varies with the versions. It comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 64-bit processor clocking at 1.8GHz speed for 32GB memory variant and at 2.15GHz for 64GB & 128GB Pro-version variants. The powerful system on chipset is backed up by 3GB LPDDR4 RAM for 32GB & 64GB variants and 4GB LPDDR4 RAM for 128GB variant.

The memory read write speed is a major flagship upgrade to the Xiaomi Mi5. The eMMC 5.1 technology is replaced by the UFC 2.0 to fasten the access of the data by 80% than the pervious.

The connectivity got an upgrade too with 4G+ network support up to 600Mbps speed over VoLTE standards. The NFC got smarter with better virtualization and write mode. In these days where NFC is ignored by the other manufacturers, an update to this piece of hardware makes Xiaomi Mi5 preferable.

Xiaomi Mi5’s camera is an impressive upgrade too. The 16MP main camera with Sony IMX298 high-definition sensor and 4-axis OIS lens is added with benefits of PDAF and DTI (pixel-to-pixel isolation) technologies making it better and powerful. The front camera is a 4MP ultra-pixel camera with wide angle lens.

The software on the board is Android 6.0 Marshmallow based MIUI 7 which would be better than Lollipop based MIUI. The flagship features include Quick Charge 3.0, UFS 2.0 (memory technology), 4G+ and advanced NFC.

The Xiaomi Mi5 basic and pro version were announced at 1,999 Yuan and 2,700 Yuan (Chinese) respectively which are $307 USD and $414 USD respectively globally. The Indian price would be ₹21,000 INR and ₹29,000 INR respectively. The prices may not be actual but the 32GB and 64GB would be priced under ₹25,000 INR and 128GB Pro-version under ₹30,000 INR respectively.

Xiaomi has packed a new surprise in Mi5 package with some cool upgrades of hardware as well as software. This phone could stand in the competition of LG G5 and Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Let’s wait till Xiaomi is released in world market including India for scoring the race.
