Asus Zenfone 2 Laser (ZE550KL) vs. Moto G3 (3rd Generation)

We have seen Zenfone 2 Laser competing with Lenovo K3 Note earlier in this ‘war of budget smartphones’ series of comparative reviews. Asus won that duel and I would like to take it to the next level, the fight with Moto G3, the 3rd generation Moto G. Motorola has packed up better features for Moto G3 that cold give a tough fight to Asus Zenfone 2 Laser.

Let’s get started!

Design

Asus and Motorola have their standards in designing a smartphone. Both the companies haven’t changed much of their conventional design ergonomics compared to their previous versions.

Design of Asus Zenfone 2 was the same but the position of the rear camera flash was tweaked as to introduce the new Laser system to it. It is of course what the device is named after. Motorola, on the other hand haven’t changed its design much but the strip connecting the camera and Moto groove logo on the back and a little tweak to its front side speaker by blending its design to the color of the black screen.

Winner: Both the gadgets have their amazing ergonomics of design. Both stand out with semi-premium stylish looks and good grip. It is your own choice now what to choose in terms of design.

Display

Zenfone 2 Laser ZE550KL and Moto G3 have got beautiful displays of HD resolutions. Both Zenfone 2 Laser and Moto G3 comes with 1280x720p display. where as Moto G comes with an upgrade to the display to 1920x1080p.

In terms of display, Moto G3 gives the sharpest and better HD experience of watching movies and playing 3D games on its 5 inch screen. That doesn’t mean that Asus Zenfone 2 Laser is bad at it. When compared to Moto G3, Zenfone 2 Laser’s display is also great with 5.5 inch bigger 720p display.

Coming to the protection, Asus Zenfone 2 Laser get Gorilla Glass 4 protection which is stronger and flexible than Gorilla Glass 3. Moto G3 gets Gorilla Glass 3 protection but gives no less protection for an average rough usage.

Winner: Apart from the little screen protection upgrade, Moto G3 wins this round. With better brightness and bigger display along with better screen protection Zenfone 2 Laser wins.

Note: Moto G3’s display is a little yellowish compared to Zenfone 2 Laser’s. Make sure you consider this difference while choosing the gadget in terms of display.

Performance

Both the devices run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processors clocking at two different speeds. Asus Zenfone 2 Laser can perform tasks at 1.2 GHz clock speed and Moto G3 performs at 1.4 GHz clock speed. Both the next versions have got 2 GB RAM and Adreno 306 GPU on board.

Zenfone 2 Laser comes with customized android 5.0 OS powered by Zen UI whereas Moto G3 comes with stable stock android 5.1.1 on board . We get the Asus Zenfone with a lot of bloatware pre-installed on it whereas Moto G3 is comes with clean stock android experience.

The Qualcomm chipsets with 2 GB RAM performs very well in terms of multi-tasking, media playing and gaming. The Asus Zen UI can be customized and is much better than the stock android but 5.0 based OS eats the RAM (due to memory leak bug) away though unnecessarily.

Winner: Overall performance of Zenfone 2 lags a step behind in terms of performance when compared to Moto G3.

Moto G3 wins the performance round.

Storage

Both the Zenfone 2 Laser and Moto G3 comes with 16 GB memory on board which can be expanded through microSD card. Zenfone 2 can be expanded up to 128 GB whereas Moto G3 can only be up to 32 GB.

Winner: Zenfone 2 Laser has got nice memory expandability upgrade with this version compared to Moto G3.

Camera

Interestingly, both the devices’ camera systems have got an upgrade. Moto G3 have been upgraded to 13 MP rear camera with dual tone LED flash and Zenfone 2 to the new laser focusing system.

Both the cameras are good but, Zenfone 2 stays a step ahead with the new Laser focusing system. Though the boasted feature of Asus isn’t working that as fast as expected on manual focusing mode, it is still counted as an upgrade to the camera which keeps Zenfone 2 a step forward.

Winner: Zenfone 2

Connectivity

Apart from the common connectivity features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, both the devices have got dual 4G SIM slots which is an upgrade for both the budget masters.

The GPS system of Asus Zenfone 2 have got the support of multiple-satellite navigation systems (as mentioned) compared to Moto G3.

Both have USB and Wi-Fi tethering options which are mostly anticipated in budget range devices. Both lacks NFC on the other side.

Winner: In terms of connectivity, both are good enough. It is now your own choice to make.

Battery

Asus Zenfone 2 has got the better battery of course, the 3000mAh Li-ion which is user replaceable. Moto G3’s have got upgraded to 2470mAh which is  better for its stock android performance. The Android 5.1.1 is stable and is good at saving battery.

Both the batteries apart from their capacities are good enough to last long for 24 hours on an average usage.

Winner: Asus have got an in-built application that cleans the RAM and saves the power. Moto G3 performs better with Android 5.1.1 on board. So, it is again your choice in terms of battery power.
