Use of Graphene in Lithium-ion batteries

Growing Graphene layers on the top of silicon, restricting the formation of Silicon Carbide by using CO2 as a mild oxidant, can allow the charging cell to reach a high density by accommodating the expansion of silicon on volumetric basis. The expanded silicon can be adjusted within the Graphene layers, also providing large density to the cell to store more charge. By accommodating the expansion of silicon, more energy can be packed in the smaller spaces too.

These Graphene layered batteries would be much denser than the conventional batteries, increasing the charging capacity and hence multiplying the battery life to a great extent. Going by the current research, this may extend the battery life of smart phones from 12 hours to 21 hours.

Samsung’s research on using Graphene layers to add to the durability, strength and energy density of the batteries has created a huge stir in the Smartphone industry. With this new innovation, customers can be much relieved with the headache of running for the charging points, every 6-7 hours of continuous use of their Smartphones.
