How Much Does It Cost To Develop an App?

The cost of developing an app varies greatly on the basis of the type of apps used as well as the platform it runs on. For example, in case of each and every platform, games are almost invariably among the most expensive products, as it usually involves the most complex coding and expertise. Other expensive apps are the ones that involve multiple interfaces for various users. The apps that come cheapest are usually the ones that suffice only one specific purpose, like a calculator app or a flashlight app.

There is only a negligible cost difference between an iOS app developer and Android apps, with the latter sometimes being a little costlier than the previous. This difference in price is caused by the different optimizations required for an app to run on different devices and operating system versions. However, the basic cost division for an iOS app developer (as well as for an Android app with probably little variations) for different example projects is as follows:

Games ($10,000-$250,000)

As already discussed, game apps are the most complex and expensive of all the other apps. The development cost of a mere Angry Bird game is nothing less than $125K-$180K. Most of the racing games that use the gyroscope are worth $125,000 for the code alone. The problem with the apps is that despite your efforts to keep it simple, it gets complicated very fast. But the game apps have its benefits as it is most viral and attracts the maximum number of people, thereby getting downloaded in much greater number. As a game app developer one has to keep in mind how to make the game competitive, fun and integrate with the online community as well as hooking into popular game centers.

Database Apps ($8,000-$50,000)

For the effective developing of a Database App you will have to provide every minute detail and the cost involves adding logic to the app and its architecting all the game plays.

Simple Apps ($1,000-$4,000)

These are the cheapest apps with development cost no more than $1500 if you are well equipped with Photoshop that will help you with the graphics.

However, using different forums to attract developers, the different companies handle their market differently.

Apple Inc

At the Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple Inc claimed to own around 1.25 apps in its app store that accounts for 50 Billion downloads. The company also takes pride in announcing that it has been successful in paying its developer community which accounts for $5 billion.

Google I/O

At the largest Android Developer Conference, Google I/O claimed about 150000 responsible 800000 apps while $900 million was paid to the developers in the last 1 year alone.

Microsoft

Microsoft on the other hand claims to have over 160000 apps in their store which was collected from over 45000 developers. An average user is calculated to download 54 apps per year and that accounts to an average of a generous 640 million downloads. The amount paid to the developing community $100 million from 2011 to date.

From the above study it is very clear that Apple wins the race in its total number of apps and the money paid to its developers. Hence, financially, developing an iOS app is more effective than an Android or a Microsoft app.
