Smartphones Are Coming With Longer Battery Life; Research Started On Graphene Layers Technology

A few hours of surfing and playing media, your battery starts shouting – I am dead!! Please Charge!

You must have witnessed this nearly every alternate day since the time you bought your new stylish and advanced specifications rich Smartphone. Either carry a power bank every time you step out or carry multiple phones, both are not-so-convenient options.

Here is a huge sigh of relief for all those smart phone users who have been experiencing battery charging issues since long.

Are phones getting smarter with a long living battery?

If sources are to be believed, one of the leading smart phone companies has come up with the next-gen technology that would nearly double your phone’s battery life. Graphene has come out to be a savior for the Smartphone industry struggling with the battery discharge problems since long.

Graphene has a range of impressive physical and chemical properties, encouraging researchers to come up with long lasting batteries. Graphene, a famous two-dimensional allotrope, has wonderful properties such as excellent conductivity and strength. With its use in the cathode material of lithium-ion batteries can bring a major revolution in the smartphone industry.

In the coming time, Graphene can be used extensively to highly enhance the charging capacity of a battery and hence double the battery life, if all goes well.

Use of Graphene in Lithium-ion batteries

Silicon has always been of high importance in batteries for its high battery capacity and energy density. But the continuous charging and discharging of Silicon tends to deteriorate its energy density and also reduces its life.

This is where Graphene comes into picture. Growing Graphene layers on the top of silicon, restricting the formation of Silicon Carbide by using CO2 as a mild oxidant, can allow the charging cell to reach a high density by accommodating the expansion of silicon on volumetric basis. The expanded silicon can be adjusted within the Graphene layers, also providing large density to the cell to store more charge. By accommodating the expansion of silicon, more energy can be packed in the smaller spaces too.

These Graphene layered batteries would be much denser than the conventional batteries, increasing the charging capacity and hence multiplying the battery life to a great extent. Going by the current research, this may extend the battery life of smart phones from 12 hours to 21 hours.

Samsung’s research on using Graphene layers to add to the durability, strength and energy density of the batteries has created a huge stir in the Smartphone industry. With this new innovation, customers can be much relieved with the headache of running for the charging points, every 6-7 hours of continuous use of their Smartphones.
